2009 Messaging Workshop

At this workshop, scientists and engineers heard from an award-winning reporter, a veteran policy maker, and an expert political strategist about effective communication. Participants learned how to get their message into the media, across to a legislator, or through to the public. Thirty-three scientists, engineers and students attended this workshop.

Nancy Shute

Nancy Shute is an award-winning journalist who has written news, feature articles, essays, and op-eds for a wide variety of national publications, from Outside and Smithsonian magazines to the New York Times, New Republic, and National Journal. She is currently a senior writer at US News & World Report, where she covers science and medicine. Shute previously was assistant managing editor at the magazine in charge of science and technology coverage. She frequently writes for the Web and appears on radio and television in major markets, including NPR, CNN, CBS, and NBC. She is on the executive board of the National Association of Science Writers and has guest lectured in journalism and science writing at Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, University of California-Santa Cruz, and University of Wisconsin. She authored a chapter in A Field Guide for Science Writers (Oxford, 2005). While serving as a Fulbright Scholar in Kamchatka, Russia, she founded the region’s first independent bilingual newspaper. Shute holds an AB in English Literature from Washington University and a Master’s of Studies in Law from Yale University.

Dean Levitan

Dean Levitan is Managing Director at Malchow Schlackman Hoppey & Cooper (MSHC), which he joined in 2004 to start a new division called State Strategies. State Strategies is specifically designed to ensure that state and local campaigns benefit from the same top-level strategic advice and creative mail received by all MSHC clients. Just as important, this service is provided at a discounted price. From the caucuses of Iowa to the streets of Philadelphia, Dean brings a unique combination of field and communications experience as Managing Director of State Strategies.

Cameron Wilson

Cameron Wilson is Director of the Office of Public Policy for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). With more than 90,000 members, ACM is the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society. Currently he is focused on following several IT policy issues for ACM including computing education, electronic voting, privacy and security, accessibility, intellectual property and reliability of computer systems. He joined ACM after spending 10 years on Capitol Hill. During his career he served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Representative Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) and on Representative Nick Smith’s (R-MI) staff. He also served as professional staff on the House Science Committee, where he oversaw technology, standards and environmental issues. For the Science Committee, he staffed several legislative efforts including the Great Lakes Legacy Act, the Help America Vote Act and the National Construction Safety Team Act.
