Scientists & Engineers for America

Campaign Education Workshops

From the President to local school board members, relatively few elected officials have a strong background in science or engineering. Yet solving the complex problems we face (healthcare, energy, climate change, STEM education, and even our physical infrastructure) depends on an understanding of the sciences. SEA’s programs bring scientists and engineers into public policy by giving them the tools to communicate about their work and encouraging them to run for office.

2009 Training Workshops

SEA is proud to announce three workshops this year to help Scientists and Engineers get more involved in politics.

July 22, Messaging Workshop

This workshop will feature Nancy Shute, an award-winning journalist; Dean Levitan, Managing Director at Malchow Schlackman Hoppey & Cooper (MSHC); and Cameron Wilson, Director of the Office of Public Policy for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

October 24, Fundraising Workshop

This workshop will feature experienced, successful fundraisers from national, local, and online campaigns from across the political spectrum. Within these presentations, we will revisit the theme of our July workshop: presenting a clear, focused message to the press and the public, but this time, within the context of both offline and online fundraising activities.

The 2009 Campaign Training workshop series is organized by Scientists and Engineers for America and sponsored in part by AAAS, ACS, APS, ASCE, AIP, and IEEE-USA.

Past Workshops

Our first annual Campaign Education Workshop was held on May 10th in Washington, DC. Speakers such as Joe Trippi, advisor to multiple presidential candidates, and Kevan Chapman, Communications Director for Congressman Vern Ehlers (MI-3), taught scientists and engineers key strategies for organizing and running a campaign.

The non-partisan workshop was open to any scientist or engineer interested in learning more about campaigns.
