UMD College Park Chapter – Current Projects
Current Projects
Elementary Outreach
In this project, we are trying to reach a younger audience with whom we can share the experiences that initially sparked our interest in science. The goal of this outreach project is to visit local middle schools or after-school care programs, and give a presentation/demonstration of "nifty" science. These demonstrations will be themed around a central scientific principle to create simplicity and a clear message. We hope that this program will inspire young students to pursue science in their coursework, and develop a positive associative relationship with scientists in general.
Science Cafe
The goal of this program is to get scientists and students from diverse backgrounds together in order to discuss current research, events, and the ways science can inform every day decisions. One possible venue is the Science Quad Table Area. There, SEA:UMCP would provide light beverages and interested scientists would make themselves available for casual discussion and conversation. The topics discussed will be at the discretion of the scientists, the students, and current events in the world. We hope that through these sorts of programs, we can enable critical evaluation skills and provide relevant facts about current topics of interest for the university population.
Legislative Communication
One of the most powerful ways to influence public policy is by corresponding with local, state, and federal officials. In this project, we hope to identify specific areas of public policy that should be directed by scientific research. We will come to science driven conclusions about these specific issues, and then petition our representatives with persuasive and easily understood communication. This can be accomplished through letters, emails, phone calls, or even in-person presentations. Hopefully, we will be able to positively influence public policy, and develop the rhetorical skills of our members.
