[edit] Issues in the 110th Congress
[edit] Consumer Protection
During the 110th Congress in the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection, H.R. 4040, the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act of 2007, originated in this committee and was passed into law. It established "consumer product safety standards and other safety requirements for children's products, including the strictest lead standard in the world. It includes rigorous testing and labeling requirements for toys." [1]
Representative John Dingell, Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee on H.R. 4040: “This conference report represents the most significant overhaul of U.S. consumer product safety laws since the creation of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, .... Together with our Senate colleagues we have developed a legislative agreement that consumer advocates are hailing as ‘momentous.’ I am proud to send this bill to the President and look forward to seeing it signed into law." [2]
[edit] Health
This Committee has held various hearings concerning health, and both "The FDA Amendments Act of 2007" and the "Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP Extension Act of 2007" passed through the committee and into law.
The FDA Amendments Act of 2007 "strengthens the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and dramatically improves drug safety." [3]
The Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP Extension Act of 2007 "prevents a scheduled 10 percent cut in Federal reimbursements to Medicare doctors for 6 months and provides a half-percent update in payments. The bill also extends a number of expiring provisions essential to Medicare beneficiaries, including measures to ensure that seniors in rural areas continue to have access to care." [4]

[edit] Committee Hearings
April 2009 Energy policy could be stalled by disagreements amongst parties in how to achieve the desired energy goals for the United States. The House Energy and Commerce Committee had three days of meetings to discuss energy efficiency. There have previously been 8 meetings throughout the year. Democratic Representatives Henry A. Waxman and Edward J. Markey are pushing to have the House before Memorial Day; however 25 Republicans on the committee signed a letter stating that they would like to have more hearings discussing the matter. The committee is also working on a comprehensive energy bill, but it will not be completed before the summer. Disagreements amongst the parties may cause longer delays in getting the legislation introduced. [5]
