  • Teaching Evolution/Intelligent Design
    • In a 2005 interview with the Star Ledger, Corzine discussed his support for strong science curricula:
      • Q: There's a movement to teach intelligent design as an alternative to Darwinism. Would you allow that in New Jersey schools?
      • Corzine: I would not be supportive of intelligent design teachings.
      • Q: Because?
      • Corzine: There is no scientific basis for it. It is an attempt to back-door through the establishment clause of the Constitution, in my opinion.

  • In July 2009, Governor Corzine announced NJ would receive $8.33 million from the U.S. Department of Energy towards rebates to encourage the purchase of ENERGY STAR qualified home appliances.[1]
  • Announced $20 million in competitive grants for state facilities to develop renewable energy projects and increase energy efficiency. [2]
  • In support of the country's first offshore wind project, Governor Corzine said that “New Jersey’s Outer Continental Shelf is a resource that holds great promise for our energy independence and should be considered a haven for the clean, renewable and environmentally friendly energy that wind power provides.”[3]
  • Joined Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in Atlantic City June 23, 2009 to award leases to companies interested in developing windmills off the Delaware and NJ coasts. [4]
  • As Governor, Corzine created the Energy Master Plan, designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020.
  • Objects to North and Mid-Atlantic offshore drilling for gas and oil.[5]
  • Expressed disappointment in the quantity of ethanol and biodiesel called for by the US EPA's Renewable Fuels Standard in late 2008. [6]
  • Showed support for a cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by signing into the International Carbon Action Partnership. [7]

  • In August 2009 the Governor signed 11 new laws to conserve farmland and and fund environmental infrastructure which included millions of dollars reserved for farmland preservation, recreation and conservation and municipal open space and park development.[9]
  • In response to demands from environmental groups for new ethical controls in state government Corzine issued the following statement via a spokesperson,[10]
Corzine "welcomes responsible ideas that will build on that record but rejects the groundless claim that the state DEP is somehow suspect because of corruption charges against legislators and local officials,"
  • As Governor, helped NJ become one of 13 states to gain EPA approval to establish greenhouse gas emissions standards for motor vehicles. [11]
  • Joined other Mid-Atlantic governors in forming the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean to protect Atlantic Ocean Resources on June 4, 2009[12]
  • As Governor, Corzine signed legislation and an executive order reforming the clean-up of polluted sites in NJ. [13]
  • Signed Executive Order 131 forming the Environmental Justice Advisory Council. The council would make recommendations to the Department of Environmental Protection with regards to environmental justice and equality in low income, minority communities. [14]
  • On the recent groundbreaking of the Mass Transit Tunnel connecting NY and NJ with hopes of decreasing car traffic and increasing the number of train commuters towards reducing carbon emmissions: "When we consider the environmental impact of tens-of-thousands of cars on our roads, quality of life issues, and impediments to commerce, a Mass Transit Tunnel is not a luxury…it is a necessity."[15]

    • NJ will receive $10 million in federal money towards H1N1 response development. The following statement was made in response to the announcement:
"New Jersey is grateful that the Obama administration recognizes the importance of planning for the possibility that H1N1 Influenza may return in a more serious form," said Governor Corzine. "It is crucial that New Jersey continue its preparedness efforts as health experts continue to watch H1N1 Influenza to determine how it will affect us in the fall."

    • Corzine believes healthcare is a right, and that the Family Care program should cover every child.[18]
    • The Governor stated: “At a time when our state and nation are facing substantial economic challenges, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to provide access to quality health insurance for our uninsured children,” in Englewood, N.J. on June 19, 2009. [19]

  • Spoke before the US Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on "Green Jobs and the New Economy". In his testimony he shared NJ's energy, environmental and green job plans and encouraged a "national strategy" to find answers to our energy challenges.   • Corzine sends daily Twitter updates to approximately 1000 followers. He also maintains an email list, a Facebook page, a Youtube channel, and sends text message updates to supporters. Corzine also maintains a blog, "Close to the Vest." The full effect of increased online campaigning is not entirely clear, but the active online presence of both candidates is credited with raising the intensity of the New Jersey gubernatorial race early in the season.[24][25]
