Environment
- Ms. Edwards notes on her website that "I want to lead the fight in Congress to preserve and protect our environment for future generations and to promote new technologies for a clean energy future. No more reliance on fossil fuels, no more subsidies for outdated, last-century energy production. I believe that in the 21st Century a sound environmental policy means good jobs, good business, and good policy. With long-term investment today, renewable and clean energy research, development, and production will provide real solutions to global warming and be the heart of next economic boom in this country -- facilitating service and technology markets all across the globe." [1]
- On carbon emissions, the candidate states: "It’s time to set mandatory limits on emissions with a goal of 20 percent reductions by 2020 and 80 percent reductions by the middle of the century...end subsidies for carbon production and provide incentives for carbon reduction through clean technologies. We must increase car fuel efficiency standards to 40 mpg – we have the technology, and we need the political will to meet the challenge." [2]
- On alternative fuel sources and nuclear power, the candidate states: "Don’t buy the hype of nuclear energy, 'clean coal,' and 'ending dependence on foreign oil.' If you can’t dispose of the deadly waste, and you can’t clean the coal until after you dirty the air and destroy mountain tops, and you can’t tell the difference to the air, land and water by trading foreign oil for domestic oil and drilling in protected environments, then it’s not sound environmental policy." [3]
Climate Change
- Ms. Edwards states on her website that "with long-term investment today, renewable and clean energy research, development, and production will provide real solutions to global warming and be the heart of next economic boom in this country -- facilitating service and technology markets all across the globe." [4]
Health
- Ms. Edwards pledges to "provide bold leadership to bring the United States in line with every other developed nation to provide accessible, affordable, quality health care to all Americans. We can no longer allow powerful insurance and pharmaceutical companies to dictate U.S. health care policy. And, we cannot allow a voice on the telephone to determine the best treatment protocol for patients – that’s the job of our doctors and medical professionals. We need bold, long-term solutions to meet our health care needs today and in the future." [5]
- She believes the government should invest in preventative health care to reduce disease in order to lower costs. Ms. Edwards is in favor of a universal, Canadian-styled, health care system, in which all Americans would have access to quality, affordable health care, regardless of employer or pre-existing conditions. She notes that "under this system, all Americans would be able to choose their doctor without the uncertainty of rising deductibles and co-payments." Under her plan, states and the federal government would be empowered to negotiate prescription drug prices, and "government must provide oversight of health insurers and pharmaceutical companies so that consumers are protected."
