CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

Compare Innovation & the Elections 2008 responses for OH-17.

SEA and eighteen other science organizations have come together to ask the 2008 congressional candidates seven questions on science and technology policy. See what Duane Grassell has said:

Innovation

Science and technology have been responsible for half of the growth of the American economy since World War II. But several recent reports question America’s continued leadership in these vital areas. What policies would you support to ensure that America remains the world leader in innovation?
I would vote terminate federal government interference in the research and development of new technologies. I believe that unrestricted free enterprise is the best method of advancement.

Climate Change

The Earth’s climate is changing and there is concern about the potentially adverse effects of these changes on life on the planet. What is your position on the following measures that have been proposed to address global climate change—a cap-and-trade system, a carbon tax, increased fuel-economy standards, and research? Are there other policies you would support?
Global warming, or climate change as it is now called is a fraud being perpetrated on the American people with a dual purpose of harming American industry and separating American citizens from their income to fund un-American UN programs.

Energy

Many scientists and policymakers say energy security and sustainability are major problems facing the United States this century. What policies would you support to meet the demand for energy while ensuring an economically and environmentally sustainable future?
I would support a return to domestic exploration and drilling, the construction of new and advanced refineries and a return to the application of nuclear power.

Education

A comparison of 15-year-olds in 30 wealthy nations found that average science scores among U.S. students ranked 17th, while average U.S. math scores ranked 24th. What role do you think the federal government should play in preparing K-12 students for the science and technology driven 21st Century?
The comparison you cite is an example of research fraud as it compares all our students, including the low achievers, against only the high achievers of other countries. When a one to one comparison is done, our students measure quite well. However, I am dedicated to removing all influence of the federal government from local public schools. The Constitution clearly states that this matter is left to the individual States.

Water

Thirty-nine states expect some level of water shortage over the next decade, and scientific studies suggest that a majority of our water resources are at risk. What policies would you support to meet demand for water resources?
It's time this country learn the benefits of desalinization. Besides, wasn't global warming suppose to cause flooding in our nation over the next 20 years?

Research

For many years, Congress has recognized the importance of science and engineering research to realizing our national goals. Given that the next Congress will likely face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in basic research in upcoming budgets?
I would vote against all federal funding for research. The Constitution does not provide for this. I feel all research should be accomplished through private donations.

Health

Americans are increasingly concerned with the cost, quality, and availability of health care. How do you see science, research, and technology contributing to improved health and quality of life?
The best way to improve health care in this nation is to completely remove the federal government from having any influence in it. The loan exception would be for Congress to pass tort reform to protect doctors from litigious lawyers who file cases not based on sound science.
