CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

Compare Innovation & the Elections 2008 responses for TX-22.

SEA and eighteen other science organizations have come together to ask the 2008 congressional candidates seven questions on science and technology policy. See what John Wieder has said:

Innovation

Science and technology have been responsible for half of the growth of the American economy since World War II. But several recent reports question America’s continued leadership in these vital areas. What policies would you support to ensure that America remains the world leader in innovation?
Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Under our current revenue service, I would continue the deductions for research and development of private companies. I would increase the budget for grants that deal with Science and Innovation, and decrease and or eliminate other grant programs.

Climate Change

The Earth’s climate is changing and there is concern about the potentially adverse effects of these changes on life on the planet. What is your position on the following measures that have been proposed to address global climate change—a cap-and-trade system, a carbon tax, increased fuel-economy standards, and research? Are there other policies you would support?
Yes, there are several things that I would support. I would have the capitol of America moved to the center of our country. I would also support building many new water systems here in the united states. We could use existing right of ways for pipelines where water from areas that are flooding could be transferred to areas that are having drought conditions. In the area we live in there is many rice canals. Also, areas that are burned, we need an aggressive reforestation program put in place. How about SEA, do you have more to contribute to this situation?

Energy

Many scientists and policymakers say energy security and sustainability are major problems facing the United States this century. What policies would you support to meet the demand for energy while ensuring an economically and environmentally sustainable future?
We need to get the current prices of oil down. We need to free our American companies to drill using environmental guidelines. We need to have other methods of energy implemented. See the web site of T BOONE PICKENS.

Education

A comparison of 15-year-olds in 30 wealthy nations found that average science scores among U.S. students ranked 17th, while average U.S. math scores ranked 24th. What role do you think the federal government should play in preparing K-12 students for the science and technology driven 21st Century?
I do not know the answer to this question. I tried substitute teaching in a local school district, not for the money, to see if what one of my sons's was saying was TRUE OR NOT. I found it to be worse than what he told me about. The teachers were spending over half the time dealing with disruptive students that did not know what the meaning of the words Respect nor Responsibility. The no kid left behind is a political ploy, but has brought the good student averages way down. So lets do something about why school districts try to keep attendance up for more government money, while the average grade points fall.

Water

Thirty-nine states expect some level of water shortage over the next decade, and scientific studies suggest that a majority of our water resources are at risk. What policies would you support to meet demand for water resources?
I answered part of this earlier in a previous response to climate changes. When we are having a flood, we need to harness these acts of nature and send the water cross county in large water systems across the country.

Research

For many years, Congress has recognized the importance of science and engineering research to realizing our national goals. Given that the next Congress will likely face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in basic research in upcoming budgets?
I answered part of this earlier in a previous response to climate changes. When we are having a flood, we need to harness these acts of nature and send the water cross county in large water systems across the country.

Health

Americans are increasingly concerned with the cost, quality, and availability of health care. How do you see science, research, and technology contributing to improved health and quality of life?
First we need to define health care as follows, Physical, Optical, Dental and Mental. Our researchers, scientist, and technology wizards needs to show in their health care related endeavors how what they do reflects on the different parts of health care.

Education

From the candidate: Return Public Schools to Academics by weeding out those who do not understand Respect and Responsibility.

Energy

From the candidate: Let them drill now to lower prices at the pump and join the T Boone Pickens on energy

Environment

From the candidate: The Wieders have taken their undeveloped properties and converted them into tree farms that are sold and replanted to aid the Wieder family tree to complete their college education Lasted Graduates are Jeremy Vest UT Austin and Christopher Vest AM College Station

Climate Change

From the candidate: We need a transnational water moving and storage network to move and save flood waters to other locations that are water deprived

Health

From the candidate: Health needs to be defined as Physical, Optical, Dental and Mental first and how they interact with each other

Innovation

From the candidate: We need to offer grants and rewards for new innovations in energy sources

Research and Research Management

From the candidate: Research is a Friend and an Ally, lets keep it that way
